Welcome to Gloucester, NSW
Gloucester is a country town on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales. Within the Manning Valley, it lies approximately 270km north-east of Sydney and 145km south-east from Newcastle. The population is 2,336.
History
The area was once inhabited by the Kattang Aborigines. The first European to set foot in the locality was Robert Dawson. Settlement occurred shortly after in the 1830s but wasn’t until 1855 that the area became known as Gloucester.
The land was initially used for sheep farming. This soon changed as it became apparent the land wasn’t suitable for this purpose. In addition, a drought in the 1840s also killed off much of the livestock.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Gloucester’s primary industries are tourism, timber and cattle farming. The town plays host to a school museum and a folk museum. The annual Gloucester AH and P District show celebrates Gloucester’s agricultural heritage.
Gloucester is also the closest town to the spectacular Barrington Tops. The scenic route of Bucketts Way, a 151km stretch of road linking Gloucester to Taree and Raymond Terrace, offers impressive views across the land.
