Glenhaven is a semi-rural suburb of Sydney. It is 32 kilometres north-west of the Sydney CBD. It has a population of over 6,100.

History

The area was once home to the Darug people.

The suburb lies in a valley. Its original name was ‘Sandhurst’. The eventual name ‘Glenhaven’ was chosen as a compromise. The upper portion of the valley was called ‘The Glen’, the lower portion ‘The Haven’.

The local post office had opened as ‘Sandhurst’ in 1892. There was also a Melbourne suburb called ‘Sandhurst’. This had caused much confusion with the delivery of mail. A public meeting was held to address the issue.

The post office was renamed ‘Glenhaven’ along with the rest of the suburb in 1894.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Two-hectare blocks are common in the area. Half the suburb is atop a ridge 180-200 metres high. Those houses built higher up have panoramic views of the Blue Mountains.

The mix of bush and farmland makes the area popular with families. The area has many wildflowers. These include waratahs, Christmas bush, and boronias.

The main shopping area for the district is Castle Hill.
