Glen Innes is a town in the New England region of New South Wales. It sits on the Northern Tablelands at the New England Highway intersection, and has a population of over 5,170.

History

Once called “Gindaaydjin” (“plenty of big round stones on clear plains”) by the Ngarabal people, Glen Innes has a long and colourful history. Early European settlers called the area “The Beardie Plains”, named after two stockmen with huge beards who would show the early squatters around. Glen Innes officially became a town in 1852, and grew massively during the 1870s when tin was discovered nearby.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Nowadays, Glen Innes is a very popular spot for tourists. Gibraltar Range National Park and Washpool National Park two of its biggest draws for their natural splendour. The Land of the Beardies History Museum offers much insight into the town’s past, and the Glen Innes Art Gallery hosts many exhibitions throughout the year. The local Arts Council puts on a variety of theatrical and cinematic displays in their state-of-the-art Chapel Theatre venue.
