Galston is a semi-rural suburb in the Hills District of Sydney. It is 36 kilometres north-west of the Sydney CBD. It has a population of just below 3,000.

The area was once home to Aborigines of the Dharug language group.

The name ‘Galston’ comes from the town in East Ayrshire, Scotland. Early settler Alex Hutchinson suggested the name in 1886 for the area’s new school.

Galston has been an agricultural town since European settlement began. It was and remains home to a large number of orchard growers. Waddell Cottage was built in 1866 by one of Galston’s original orchard growers, James Waddell. The building remains a well-maintained tourist attraction.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Agriculture remains a significant industry. Large orchards grow citrus, persimmons, strawberries and stone fruit. Some properties grow hydroponic produce.

Galston has a commercial hub. This includes a shopping village with large stores like Aldi.

Community facilities include a skate park and aquatic centre.

The area hosts many popular local events. This includes the Bushland Shire Festival. It is held at Galston’s Fagan Park every September.
