Located 17km north-east of Sydney CBD, Freshwater is part of the Northern Beaches region in New South Wales. It has a population of 8,252.

History

Evidence of Indigenous settlements around Freshwater can still be seen today through rock engraving, rock shelters and open campsites. The first European occupation took place in 1815 when 50 acres of land was granted to Thomas Bruin.

The area became known as Freshwater due to the small stream of fresh water that ran down to the beach. Previously known as Harbord, the suburb officially became Freshwater in 2008 after many years of dispute.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Freshwater’s claim to fame is that is the area where surfboard riding was first introduced in Australia. Duke Kahanamoku, Hawaiian world sprint swimming champion demonstrated his surfing skills here whilst on tour.

The suburbs sits on a stunning beach located between two headlands and is a popular spot for holidaymakers. The thriving suburb offers a number of cafes, restaurants, shops, supermarkets and businesses.
