Welcome to Forestville, NSW
The suburb of Forestville in northern Sydney is 12km outside of the town’s central business district. Located in the Northern Beaches Council local government area, it is known locally as “The Forest”. This is because the town was originally located within a forest that has long since been felled. The area has a population of almost 8,000 people.
History
With a history in the timber industry, the first structure in the area was a Wharf at Bantry Bay around 1856 which was used for shipping timber to Sydney. Following the acquisition of further land, the area became one of the many soldier settlement zones where farms were provided to those returning from the Second World War. Housing development in the area took off at a pace from the early 1960s onwards.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Forestville has several parks and reserves and the area is surrounded by mainly unspoilt bushland. It is probably for this reason that most of the housing is low density within small plots. The main shopping area on Darley and Starkey Streets hosts a wide range of shops and food outlets.
The region has sports fields and ball courts including the Forest Killarney Soccer Club. Several primary and high schools cater for the area’s educational needs and NSW Wildlife Information and Rescue Services are located in the suburb.
