Flinders is an oceanfront suburb of Shellharbour, NSW. It is approximately 86 kilometres south-southwest of Sydney. It has a population of 5,200.

History

The area was once home to the Wodi Wodi group of the Dharawal people.

The suburb is the namesake of explorer Matthew Flinders. Flinders and colleague George Bass were the first Europeans to discover the area in 1796.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Flinders is known for occupying one of the most beautiful areas of the Illawarra region. The suburb is a popular outdoor recreation spot. Its many beaches are popular picnic, swimming and surfing spots.

Flinders has 60 hectares of green open spaces. These include bush reserves, waterways and landscaped parks.

Newer residential housing in Flinders is designed to work with the natural environment. One example is Woodlands Estate. It winds around Tongarra Creek, which feeds into Shadforth Wetlands.

Flinders has a large commercial sector. This includes boutique shopping and many cafes and restaurants. Its main shopping centre complex is Stockland Shellharbour, home to over 220 stores.
