Five Dock is a well-established suburb located just 10km west of the Sydney central business district. It has a population of around 9,000 people and is part of the local government area of the City of Canada Bay.

History

Five Dock’s name comes from the shape of its bay on the Parramatta River. There were once five naturally formed indentations, which resembled docks. The first mention of ‘Five Dock Bay’ appeared in the Sydney Gazette in 1805.

Five Dock is known for having some interesting street names with streets named after everything from politicians and landowners to royalty and even US navy ships, which visited in 1908.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The Great North Road is home to the town’s commercial area with lots of shops, restaurants and cafes situated on a 500-metre long strip.

Elsewhere, there are several parks and areas of foreshore which feature walking and cycling trails.
