History

Erskineville takes its name from Erskine Villa. This was the home of Reverend George Erskine, a Wesleyan minister.

In the 20th century, Erskineville was a working class suburb. The area had an unfortunate reputation for street violence. However, from the 1970s, Erskineville became gentrified.
