Eden is the southernmost town in New South Wales. It’s in the South Coast region, and sits between Nullica Bay and Calle Calle Bay. This tranquil coastal retreat has a population of more than 3,000.

History

Once home to the Thaua people, the area was first visited by European whalers in the 1790s. A whaling station was established in 1828, and the Imlay Brothers constructed Eden’s first building in 1834. A township plan was completed in 1843, and Eden began to take shape. The discovery of gold caused a boost in the 1850s, and Eden was even considered a candidate for the Australian capital in 1901. The whaling industry had ended by the 1930s, but Eden continued to thrive as a bustling port town.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Eden is a tourist hotspot surrounded by coastal wilderness. It’s an excellent place for whale watching, and Ben Boyd National Park is a nature lover’s dream. The Eden Killer Whale Museum is full of info on the town’s past, and displays the skeleton of the legendary orca, Old Tom. There are plenty of lovely seafood restaurants, and the Sapphire Marine Discovery Centre is well worth a visit.
