Dungog is a town in the Hunter Region of New South Wales. It sits on the William River, and is surrounded by breathtaking countryside. The town has a population of over 2,100.

History

Built on lands first owned by the Gringai clan, Dungog began life as a small village in 1838. It grew quickly, acquiring pubs, shops and a courthouse before too long. More and more was added over the next few decades, and the town’s large grid plan allowed buildings to be constructed considerable distances apart. This adds to Dungog’s image as a laid-back rural retreat stretched lazily over the plains.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

There’s plenty to do in Dungog and the surrounding country. The James Theatre is one of Australia’s oldest purpose-built cinemas, and hosts the Dungog Film Festival every year. The Dungog Museum and Historical Society are well worth checking out, relaying the town’s story through fresh and engaging exhibits.
