History

After the settlement of Sydney Cove in 1788, fisherman began to shelter in Double Bay. Soon there were farms on shore.

A century later, Charles Amos Messenger built Sydney Harbour’s first boatshed. It was moved from Balmain to Double Bay. It became a focus for community life.

Messenger’s son Dally Messenger was a famous Rugby League player.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Art Deco apartment blocks line the wide streets of Double Bay. The housing attracts professionals, British and Irish expatriates and empty-nesters.

Sydneysiders nicknamed the suburb ‘Double Pay’ in the 1980s. The term refers to the wealth of residents and prices on the boutique high street. New South Head Rd is a centre for bridal wear.

Locals enjoy the cafes, parks, and sandy foreshore. The Murray Rose Harbour Pool is popular.
