Dorrigo is a small town on the Waterfall Way on the Northern Tablelands in New South Wales. Part of the Bellingen local government area and 580km north of Sydney, it has a population of over 1,000.
History
The land was originally home to the Aboriginal people of the Gumbaynggirr nation.
The first European to the district was Land Commissioner Oakes. The name comes from the Aboriginal word “dondorrigo”_x009d_ which means “stringy-bark”_x009d_. It was previously thought to have gotten its name after a Spanish General named Don Dorrigo.
The escaped convict Richard Craig was the first European to discover the Dorrigo Plateau.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Today, the main industries in the town are dairy and tourism. It is home to the planned Dorrigo Steam Railway and Museum, which is not yet open to the public. It is one of the most comprehensive railway collections in the world. Danger Falls is located 1.2km north of Dorrigo.
