Dee Why is a growing suburb in New South Wales that has been transformed by professionals and families. It’s situated 18 kilometres north-east of Sydney’s central business district and has a population of around 19,800.

History

No one seems to know for sure where the name Dee Why came from. The earliest reference is a note in a field book written by a surveyor called James Meehan. Some people believe the name was taken from the Aboriginal language. Others say that the letters DY were a marker that Meehan used to mark locations on his map.

The New South Wales government listed the first land in the area as 700 acres owned by a man called William Cossar. This dates back to the 19th century.

Dee Why has a surfing beach that runs along the eastern border and overlooks the Tasman Sea, as well as a lagoon. It has a really good shopping areas, cafes and public spaces too.

There are also heaps of parks, sports clubs and recreational areas that help to make Dee Why a popular place to live.
