Darlinghurst is one of Sydney’s inner-city suburbs, located east of the central business district. Its population is 10,060, and the suburb has the highest percentage of Gen X and Y residents in Australia.

History

Darlinghurst was once known as Eastern Hill and Henrietta Town. In the early 19th Century, it was renamed after Elizabeth Darling, the wife of Governor Ralph Darling. The suburb was known as a slum and a red-light district, before undergoing an urban renewal in the 1980s.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Darlinghurst is home to Oxford Street, and the annual Sydney Mardi Gras. Around the area, there are plenty of cafes and boutique indie stores, as well as an up-and-coming small bar scene. Must-sees include the Australian Museum, the Darlinghurst Gaol, and the Sydney Jewish Museum.
