Based in New South Wales, Coonabarabran is a town in Warrumbungle Shire. It lies 451km north-west of Sydney and 161km north east of Dubbo. According to the 2011 census, it has a population of over 2,600 people.

History

The Kamilaroi people are the original inhabitants of the area. They occupied the area for over 7,000 years.

In 1817, European settlers arrived in the area. In 1850, the town Post Office opened. However, the town didn’t take shape until 1859. In 1929, locals built Coonabarabran Memorial Clock Tower. Build from local sandstone, it is a central feature in the town.

Astronomy is a popular in this town. Locals love visiting the Siding Spring Observatory. The Pilliga Forest and Warrumbungle National Park are nearby. This makes it popular with visiting nature lovers.
