Chester Hill is a suburb that lies in the local government area of Canterbury-Bankstown Council, New South Wales. It is 25km west of Sydney’s CBD and has a population of over 11,500.

History

Chester Hill’s name is an inversion of Hillchester, which is thought to be a place in England but doesn’t exist. ‘Chester”, an English form of the Latin word ‘castra’, means a fortified camp.

The name was given by Mrs H. A. McMillan. She originally wanted to call the place Hillcrest after an estate near Regent’s Park. She later suggested name Hillchester. Neither of these names were successful. Chester Hill was originally part of John Thomas Campbell’s estate and was known as Campbell Hill.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The main shopping centre is Chester Square. The suburb is also home to a branch of the Bankstown City Library, Chester Hill Fire station, and a community centre. There are several parks in Chester Hill and five schools. There is also a community garden and a bowling club.
