Cardiff is a major suburb in New South Wales located 13 kilometres west-southwest of Newcastle’s central business district. It has an estimated population of 5,700 and is a busy business area.

History

The suburb of Cardiff was once known as the Winding Creek area. Many people were attracted to Winding Creek in the 19th century because it was a coal mining town with a railway line.

In the 1880s, the name Lymington replaced Winding Creek. As Lymington was similar to another local area name, the postal service didn’t like it. A Welsh man called James Edwards suggested the name Cardiff after the capital of Wales. It was adopted in 1889.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Cardiff has a good shopping centre that contains pharmacies, banks, restaurants, specialty stores and supermarkets. Sporting facilities include tennis courts, football fields, lawn bowls, rugby grounds and cricket.

The suburb is also home to lots of car dealerships, as well as three state schools and a Catholic school.
