History

Byron Bay gets its name from naval officer John Byron. Captain James Cook named the area after him when he came to Byron Bay on board his ship, the Endeavour. Famous poet Lord Byron is the grandson of John Byron. Before it was known as Byron Bay, the area was referred to as Cavvanbah. This is an Aboriginal word that means ‘meeting place’.
