Burwood sits in Sydney’s Inner West, 12km from the central business district. It is a suburb with a population of 12,466.

History

Indigenous people have lived in the area for over 11,000 years. The first British settlers arrived in 1788. They brought a smallpox epidemic with them. This drove the local Wangal clan away from the area.

The suburb takes its name from Burwood Farm. This was a property owned by Captain Thomas Rowley. It was named after Burwood Park in England. The area’s first house was name Burwood Villa. It went up in 1814. A railway line opened in
1855. This led to massive population growth in the 1870s.

Burwood is still home to Burwood Park. The park includes a cricket oval, a war memorial, a rotunda, a lake, a playground, and an obelisk.

Local heritage sites include St Paul’s Anglican Church, Woodstock, and The Priory.
