An isolated mining city in the far west of outback New South Wales, Broken Hill is the longest-lived mining city in Australia. It has a population of around 19,000.

History

Also known as “The Silver City”, the “Oasis of the West” and the ‘Capital of the Outback”, Broken Hill was given its name by the explorer Charles Sturt. In 1844, he saw and named the Barrier Range that surrounds the city and referred to a “Broken Hill” in his diary.

Originally known by the local Aborigines as “Leaping Crest”, Broken Hill was named after a number of hills that appeared to have a break in them. These no longer exist due to mining.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Dominated by the mining industry, the Broken Hill Ore Deposit, until recently, provided the majority of employment in the city. The city has many natural and manmade attractions on offer, including exciting nightlife choices.
