History

Pioneer Thomas Saywell named Brighton for the English resort town. He built a tramway in the area. It opened about the same time as the railway. Saywell built public swimming baths, a race course, a hotel, and picnic area.

Brighton became known as Brighton-Le-Sands.

Residential development went on between the two world wars. Shanty sites occupied much of the area during the Depression years. Significant development occurred after World War II.

A storm destroyed the public baths in 1966. Sydney Airport’s expansion devastated Brighton Beach.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Brighton-Le-Sands has a large Greek community. The suburb is popular with families. The coastal walkway is popular for cyclists and joggers. Restaurants and cafes line The Grand Parade and Bay Street. They represent many cuisines. It is a destination for seafood.

The suburb has a supermarket and all essential services.
