Brewarrina is a historic town located on the Barwon River in the far north-west of New South Wales. It is almost 800km north-west of Sydney and nearly 100km east of Bourke. In 2011, the population in Brewarrina was 1,254.
History
The region of Brewarrina has a rich Indigenous history and was the meeting place for many Aboriginal groups. The Aboriginal stone fish traps that are still in existence in the area are thought to be over 40,000 years old.
The name Brewarrina, or ‘Bre’ as it is known locally, come from the Aboriginal word for a species of Acacia tree.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
With its wide main street, charming pubs and beautiful parks, Brewarrina is a remarkable town steeped in history.
Fishing and watersports are popular pastimes, and the Narran Lakes Nature Reserve is 50km away from the town. Brewarrina also has a number of sports teams including rugby union, rugby league, netball and tennis. For the younger ones, there is a circus skills training project which gives children the chance to travel nationally and internationally to perform.
