History
The area takes its name from a loose translation of the Aboriginal word meaning “high”. The area has been inhabited to some degree for over 200 years and the town grew rapidly between the 1860s and 1890s. This was due to the arrival of the Sydney to Melbourne railway.
In an effort to make the town look more English the locals planted many European trees and other plants around the town.
