History

Newspaper editor Edward Smith Hall snagged a bargain when he bought 200 acres of prime beachside land for 200 pounds in 1851. The area, alternately called Boondi, Bundi and Bundye throughout its history, had belonged to a road builder. The name Bondi comes from an Aboriginal word meaning ‘water breaking over rocks’.
