Bondi Junction a suburb in Sydney’s east, 6km east of the CBD. Belonging to the local government area of Waverley, it has a population of over 8,500.

History

Bondi Junction gets its name from the Aboriginal word ‘Bondi’ which means “water breaking over rocks”.

In 1832, Henry Hough was given land on the site of Bondi Junction. He built a wind-powered flour mill on the land. He named his farm “Hope”, but it was known locally as “Mill Hill”.

The suburb was referred to as Bondi Junction with the extension of the tram lines to Bondi Beach, Charing Cross, and Bronte in the late 1800s. By the 1930s, Bondi Junction grew into a major entertainment and commercial area.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Bondi Junction and the surrounding area is famous for its rugby league team, the Sydney Roosters. Many of the original pubs in the suburb have been maintained, most notably the Nelson Hotel.
