Bondi Beach is one of the most famous tourist sites in Australia, located just 7km east of Sydney. It has a population of over 10,000 people but welcomes over 2 million visitors each year.

History

Bondi Beach takes its name from the aboriginal word ‘Boondi’ which means ‘noise of water breaking over rocks’. It was originally known as The O’Brien Estate after one of the settlers who purchased land there following initial land grants which took place as early as 1809.

O’Brien made the beach are open to the public but threatened to revoke access as it became more popular. The Council intervened and Bondi Beach was declared a public beach in 1882.

Of course, the main reason for visiting Bondi Beach is the magnificent beach which is about 1km long. The area is also synonymous with surfing with its powerful currents created ideal conditions for surfers who come from around the world.
