History
‘Bombala’ is an Aboriginal word. It means “meeting of the waters”. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the 1830s.
They built large farms and properties. By the 1850s, the town had shops and a post-office.
The town might have had a different history. King O’Malley suggested it as the seat of Australian parliament, but politicians rejected it in favour of Canberra.

Bombala is ‘platypus country’. Tourists flock to the river to catch a glimpse of the shy animal. The river is a hotspot for fly-fishing. Hikers and mountain-bikers adventure on the numerous trails.
Australia’s early history is on show in the historic railway and settler’s huts. Surrounding the town, specialty producers farm lavender, herbs, and rabbits. Dense native forests feed the local timber industry.
