Blakehurst is a suburb in New South Wales that is connected to Sylvania. It is situated 18 kilometres south of Sydney’s central business district and has a population of around 6,000.

History

The suburb takes it name from the former road assessor and postmaster for Cooks River, William Blake. He ran a small farm in Blakehurst in the 1800s.

Tom Uglys Bridge connects Blakehurst to the Sutherland Shire, and was originally known as Georges River Bridge when it opened in 1929.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Blakehurst has a small shopping strip on the Princes Highway close to King Georges Road. Lots of local businesses can be found in the same area of town. The suburb is also home to the 4500 square metre landmark sandstone mansion, The Castle.

There is a bus service that runs between Hurstville and Miranda via Blakehurst. Many churches and schools are on the doorstep too.
