Blacktown is a multicultural suburb in the state of New South Wales. It is located 34 kilometres west of Sydney’s central business district and has a population of over 43,300.

History

The area of Blacktown was once lived-in by different groups of the Darug people. It is believed that fifty to ninety percent of the Darug tribe died of smallpox and other diseases around the same time as the British arrival.

In 1823, the Native Institution moved from Parramatta to where Richmond Road meets Rooty Hill Road North. The institution closed in 1833. It was in 1860 when the railway department gave the local station the name of Black Town Road Station. The name was shortened to Blacktown in 1862.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Blacktown has a major shopping centre called Westpoint Blacktown. This area of the suburb is surrounded by lots of restaurants, hotels and small shops.

There is also the Blacktown Arts Centre, as well as sporting facilities including Blacktown Stadium and Blacktown Olympic Park.
