Based in New South Wales, Birrong is a suburb in Sydney. It falls under the Canterbury-Bankstown Council. It lies 22km south-west of Sydney’s Central Business District. According to the 2011 census, Birrong has a population of over 2,100 people.

History

Joseph Hyde Potts was one of the first settlers in the area. In 1835, he received land in the area. In 1928, the railway opened in Birrong. As a result, development in the area increased. In 1955, Birrong opened its first post office.

Birrong takes its name from the native word meaning star. In 1927, this became the suburb’s official name.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Birrong is home to two beautiful parks. These are Jim Ring Reserve and Maluga Passive Park.

The suburb has one school. Birrong Girls High School is a public high school for girls, established in 1957. There are currently 820 students in attendance.
