Birchgrove is a suburb in Sydney’s inner west, and is around 5km west of Sydney’s CBD. It overlooks Sydney Harbour, and has a population of 3,107, according to the 2011 census.

History

The name Birchgrove comes from Birchgrove House, which was built by Lieutenant John Birch around 1812. The first subdivisions of the land were between 1856 and 1860, and in the 1860s a number of new businesses appeared in the area. The suburb continued to grow in the late 1800s, and today it is one of the wealthier suburbs in Sydney.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

With its location near the water, Birchgrove is home to the Balmain Sailing Club. The Club hosts the oldest regatta in Australia, the Balmain Regatta, which runs annually. Birchgrove also has a public school and church. Nearby, the shopping strip of Balmain provides ample eateries, shopping, and more.
