Berowra is 38 kilometres to the north of Sydney’s central business district. The suburb has a population of 4,623. It sits to the east of Berowra Waters, and the south-east of Berowra Heights.

History

Berowra has a rich history running back centuries. The world’s oldest living amphibian fossil was found in the area. It was also a site of Aboriginal settlement. The suburb takes its name from an Aboriginal word meaning “place of many winds”. There are many surviving Aboriginal carvings in the area.

The first British settlers arrived in the 1860s. The Main Northern railway was extended to Berowra in 1887.

Lifestyle and entertainment

Today, Berowra is a largely residential area. However, there is a small retail precinct in the suburb.

It is easy to travel from Berowra to the rest of Sydney. There is easy access to the M1 Pacific Motorway, as well as the Pacific Highway. Berowra is serviced by both the North Shore, Northern & Western and the Newcastle and Central Coast Railways.
