Berala is a suburb in Sydney, NSW. It is 20 kilometres outside of the city’s CBD and has a population of 8,800 people.

History

The name came from an Aboriginal word meaning ‘musk duck’. This is because the area used to be covered in swampland that attracted wild birds.

Berala’s railway station opened in 1912, its public school in 1924, and the post office in 1927.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Today, the town has a large proportion of Cantonese and Mandarin speakers. There is a good choice of schools, a range of shops, including a Woolworths, and lots of leisure opportunities.

Coleman Park, in the town, has two football pitches, two mini football pitches, a baseball field, children’s playground, and basketball court. The town is proud of its junior rugby league team, the Berala Bears. They play in the Canterbury-Bankstown District competition.
