History

Belmore was originally known as Darkwater. It was later named after the Governor of New South Wales in the 1860s, the Earl of Belmore. In 1895 Belmore became connected to other locations by rail. The railway line splits the town in two. The town was known for its orchards, markets, and gardens.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

More recently Belmore is known for a number of beautiful Art Deco buildings. These include the station master’s cottage, and several other buildings, on Burwood Road. Belmore also has a shopping centre which services local residents and others. Belmore has rugby on at Belmore Sports Ground. A Greek Orthodox Church serves the significant Greek community in the town.
