Located 20km from Newcastle’s central business district, Belmont has a population of 6,420. It sits on a sandy peninsula on the eastern side of Lake Macquarie.

History

Belmont has a rich and expansive history. The area was originally home to the Awabakal People, and a Christian mission was established in 1825.

The suburb boasted many rich seams of coal, which led to the opening of a number of collieries locally. All but the largest of these closed during a coal slump in the 1960s and 1970s, and none remain active today.

The opening of the Pacific Highway in the 1920s was a boon to Belmont. The area had previously been difficult to access due to poor road conditions locally.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Lake Macquarie’s sole public hospital is located on Belmont’s Croudace Bay Road. The suburb also offers many schools, as well as a thriving selection of shops and restaurants.
