Bellingen lies halfway between Brisbane and Sydney on the Mid North Coast. The small town has a population of over 3,000 people.

History

For a long time, the land was home to the Gumbaynggirr people. However, in 1840 the first Europeans arrived and used the area for cedar cutting and later for dairy farming.

Clement Hodgkinson gave the settlement its name. He used a variation of the Aboriginal name for the nearby river. This word sounded similar to Bellingen. Incidentally, the river is called Bellinger River. That’s because the draughtsman compiling the area map mistook Hodgkinson’s handwritten “n” for an “r”.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Bellingen is a town with a vibrant art scene. It hosts numerous events including the Global Carnival and the Readers and Writers Festival. Twice a year the city also organises the fundraising event Plant Fairs. With the earnings, it supports the local environment centre.
