Bega is a town in the south eastern corner of New South Wales. It is found in the Bega Valley Shire. Bega is 225km away from Canberra, and 421km from Sydney. It has a population of 4,537.

History

Aborigines lived in the areas for years before European settlers arrived. The Yuin-Monaro tribe are claimed to have referred to Bega as either the ‘big camping ground’ or ‘beautiful,’ which the name is derived from. George Bass travelled through the area in 1797. The land was used for dairy and cattle farms in the middle of the next century. Gold was discovered in a nearby area in the 1870s, bringing more money to Bega.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Bega Cheese is manufactured locally, and residents won’t let you leave without trying a slice. The Bega Co-operative Society Limited export dairy products to all four corners of the globe. Bega also has listed buildings such as the Bega Court House. The Sapphire Marketplace is a nearby shopping mall with a number of big brands.
