Based in New South Wales, Beacon Hill is a suburb in northern Sydney. It lies 17km north-east of Sydney’s Central Business District, and is part of the Northern Beaches. According to the 2011 census, Beacon Hill has a population of over 6,900 people.

History

Little is known about Beacon Hill’s indigenous past. However, its neighbouring areas show evidence of aboriginal carvings. In 1857, European settlers were granted land in Beacon Hill. In 1881, the Department of Lands built a trig beacon, giving the suburb its name.

Many of Beacon Hill’s houses were built after World War II. In 1949, Beacon Hill opened its first post office. However, this closed in 1986.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Many of Beacon Hill’s streets take their names from battles, military men, or places connected with World War II. For example, you will see Kokoda Crescent, Owen Stanley Avenue, and Lae Place.

Travellers can visit Governor Phillip Lookout. Sitting at the top of Beacon Hill, this lookout point shows amazing views of Sydney’s entire eastern half.
