Baulkham Hills is 31km to the north-west of the Sydney central business district and has a population of around 34,000 people. It is classed as a suburb of Sydney though it is mostly in the local government area of The Hills Shire.

History

The land on which the suburb of Baulkham Hills is now situated was inhabited by a clan of the Darug indigenous Aboriginals called the Bidjigal people.

The first settler to the area was William Joyce who was granted the land in 1794. Baulkham Hills was officially recognised as the name of the area in 1802 and was chosen by a settler called Andrew McDougall who named the land after a place in his native Scotland called Buckholm Hills.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The Stockland Baulkham Hills shopping centre was redeveloped in 2008 and now has over 70 speciality stores as well as branches of some of the leading supermarkets.

The Bidjigal Reserve pays tribute to the indigenous tribe who once lived in the area and is home to a wide variety of native fauna and animals
