Bathurst is a regional city in the Central Tablelands of NSW. It’s 200km north-west of Sydney and is Australia’s oldest inland settlement. Its current population is 36,013.

History

In the early 1800’s, the area was a base for many of the early explorers. Flecks of gold were first discovered in 1823, but the discovery of payable gold was announced in 1825. When news spread, people from all around the world came to the area to find gold. Bathurst boomed in the 1860’s and was the first gold centre of Australia.

The population grew after World War II when migrants settled in the area. Returned soldiers were offered farming land in the suburb.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Today, the area is known for its motorsport. Mt Panorama, a major racing circuit, is located in the area. It features Bathurst’s 12 Hour Motor Race each February.
