Batemans Bay is a town in New South Wales. It’s situated on the Princes Highway in the South Coast Region. Batemans Bay comes under the Eurobodalla Shire local government area, and has a population of more than 11,300.

History

Prior to the 19th century, the area was home to the Yuin people of the Walbunja tribe. The name Batemans Bay came courtesy of Captain James Cook, who sailed past it in 1770. Initial European settlement was scattered and disjointed, and the town didn’t really take shape until the 1840s. Oyster farming became huge in the 1860s, and Batemans Bay was declared a port in 1885. The town continues to thrive.

Batemans Bay is the nearest seaside town to Canberra, which makes it very popular with holidaymakers from the capital. Its residents are mainly retirees and young families seeking the breezy coastal life. Batemans Bay is the site of Australia’s third-oldest fish and chip shop, which is still very much in business. The Clyde Valley is great for scenic walks, and Clyde River oysters are widely regarded as some of the best in the world.
