Bankstown is a suburb 20 kilometres west of Sydney’s central business district. The town has a population of over 30,000. It is located in the government area of Canterbury-Bankstown Council.

History

Bankstown was named after Sir Joseph Banks by Governor Hunter in 1797. Sir Joseph Banks spent some time travelling through Australia with Captain James Cook in 1770. The local airport was once used as an air base for the US Forces, British Fleet Air Arm, and RAAF during World War II. The town’s industrial revolution began at the same time. Furthermore, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II visited Bankstown in 1980 to award the area its city status.

Bankstown is one of the most diverse districts in the country. It offers locals a thriving commercial hub that boasts over 7000 businesses. The suburb is home to Bankstown Railway Station, Sydney Metropolitan Airport and a large number of bus services.

The area has lots of big parks like Paul Keating Park, McLeod Reserve and Bankstown City Gardens. Bankstown is also known for the modern Bankstown Central Shopping Centre.
