Located in the Byron Shire, Bangalow is a small town with a population of 1,902. The town is situated just off the Pacific Highway, approximately 765 kilometres north of Sydney, and 167 kilometres south of Brisbane.

History

Bangalow was established in the 1880s. Its name appears to be derived from the Aboriginal word, “Bangalla”, which means either ‘a low hill’, or ‘a kind of palm tree’. The town was known as Bangaloe until 1907, when the name was adapted to modern spelling.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

With its close proximity to the popular Byron Bay, Bangalow is a preferred stop for an overnight stay or a day trip. Its main street is home to cafes and boutique shops, and organic local produce can be found in cafes. Bangalow is also home to the annual Bangalow Billy Cart Derby.
