Balmain is on a peninsula in the Sydney Harbour. It is very central, just 6km from the Central Business District. It has a population of 9,783.

History

Balmain was industrialised in the 1800s. Ship building, engineering, boilermaking and metal work industries were important in the area. The workers needed somewhere to live, and so people built cheap housing. From the 1960s onwards, industry declined. Many of the old factories are now apartment blocks.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Balmain has attractive, although expensive, housing. Its location on the waterfront makes it a desirable place to live. Both in the past and now, Balmain has had many famous residents. These include the author and journalist Geraldine Brooks, and the actress Lottie Lyell.

Many of the old heritage building are still there for visitors to enjoy. There are numerous hotels where you can stop to have a drink.
