Awaba is a small town located 7km west of Toronto which is home to a population of around 400 people. It falls under the local government area of the City of Lake Macquarie.

History

Pronounced ‘ar-wah-bah’, the town takes its name from an aboriginal word meaning ‘flat or plain surface’ which refers to nearby Lake Macquarie. Early settlers to the area mainly consisted of timber workers and a timber depot was established in 1885. Soon after, a railway construction depot and a saw mill were built and the village developed to provide homes to workers and contractors.

The Awaba State Coal Mine was established in 1948.

Awaba is a mainly residential town but its proximity to Toronto and the stunning Lake Macquarie make it well worth a visit if you are looking for a quieter place to stay. It has a number of small shops, businesses and services.
