Austral is a suburb in New South Wales, 42km south-west of Sydney’s CBD. In the local government area of the City of Liverpool, it has a population of over 3,000.

History

The area was once a parcel of land in West Hoxton that was bought by the Austral Banking and Land Proprietary. In 1891, residents pushed for a second public school in the area of Hoxton Park. Austral Banking and Land Proprietary donated 3 acres for the school and in return, it was named Austral Public School after them. Austral Post Office opened in 1894.

The school’s name became closely associated with the area and in 1972, the suburb officially became known as Austral. Its streets are all laid out in a grid pattern.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Austral is home to a sportsground, a youth centre, a skate park, a tennis court, and a bowls ground. It also features the W V Scott Memorial Park that includes a pavilion.
