Ashcroft is a residential suburb, located in Sydney’s south-west. It’s 35km away from the central business district, in the area of Liverpool. Its current population is 3,308.

History

The suburb was formed as part of the Housing Commission’s Green Valley development. Although named earlier, the Government gazetted it in 1972.

The pioneering family of the district, the Ashcroft’s, provided the town with its name. They gave the land to the Government so they could build the development. The family established the meat wholesaling and retailing activities at the Homebush Abattoir. E.J. Ashcroft was a butcher in Liverpool in the 1890’s.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Most residents are Australian-born. Other common birthplaces include Lebanon, Vietnam and Iraq.

The area has it’s own primary school and high school. Ashcroft High School was the first co-educational school to win the Arrive Alive Cup in 1977. They won it again in 1985.
