Ashbury is a Sydney suburb found 10km west of the central business district. It’s split between two local government areas; the Inner West Council and the Canterbury-Bankstown Council. Ashbury has a population of more than 3,100.

History

The Ashbury area was once inhabited by members of the Darug tribe. European settlement began in the early 1800s, when the area still called Canterbury Vale. Housing development really kicked off in 1919, following the founding of the South Ashfield Brickworks in 1910. South Ashfield Primary School opened in 1924, and changed its name to Ashbury Public School in 1926.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Ashbury is a mostly residential suburb bordering the Cooks River. It’s most famous attraction is Peace Park, which is the highest point in the Canterbury-Bankstown Council. Ashbury is also known for its strong cycling routes. The suburb has several shops, and dining options include First Street Pantry and Oceanmaster Seafood.
