History

Arncliffe was home to a number of aboriginal tribes before European settlers arrived. They were members of the Cadigal, Gweagal, and Bidjigal clans. Arncliffe gets its name from a village in the UK in North Yorkshire. Arncliffe or ‘Arneclif’ appears in the 1086 Domesday Book. It was seen as something of a vegetable garden for the city of Sydney. The railway line arrived in 1884, cutting the town in half.
